New York/New Delhi: United States authorities have placed an Indian-origin laboratory owner on a federal fugitive list for allegedly orchestrating a $93-million healthcare fraud scheme targeting the Medicare program through unauthorized genetic testing. Khadeer Khan Mohammed, 46, who owned American Premier Labs LLC in Richardson, Texas, is accused of systematically filing ineligible claims for reimbursement and unlawfully siphoning tens of millions of dollars from the federal healthcare system.
According to the Office of Inspector General at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS-OIG), Mohammed operated the fraudulent network between August 2023 and October 2024 across the Northern District of Texas and surrounding jurisdictions. Investigators revealed that American Premier submitted approximately $93 million in fraudulent Medicare claims, prompting the government program to disburse at least $65 million in payouts. During an intensive ten-day stretch in 2023 alone, Medicare paid roughly $13 million against these deceptive filings. Federal law enforcement has since seized nearly $6 million from bank accounts linked to Mohammed as part of the asset-recovery effort.
The scheme hinged heavily on the unauthorized use of medical practitioners’ personal identifying credentials. Federal prosecutors noted that Mohammed allegedly appropriated physicians’ details without their knowledge or consent to bill for expensive genetic lab tests for patients whom the doctors had never treated. The tests were neither requisitioned by the named physicians nor utilized in patient diagnostics and medical care, serving solely to make the bogus lab submissions appear clinically authorized.
Federal agencies, including the FBI’s Dallas Field Office and HHS-OIG, believe Mohammed has fled the United States and may currently be residing in Hyderabad, India. Officials have issued an international bulletin urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the agency’s fugitive hotline while extradition and legal procedures proceed.
