London: Thousands of devotees and spectators gathered on the banks of the River Thames on Sunday to participate in London’s inaugural Ganga Aarti, marking an unprecedented cross-cultural ceremony of light and thanksgiving. The event, titled “Ganga Aarti on the Thames: A Ceremony of Light,” was held at the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich and organised by Chinmaya Mission UK in partnership with the annual Totally Thames festival. Staged as part of worldwide commemorations celebrating 75 years of the Chinmaya Mission charity, the ceremony paid homage to the timeless ethos of riverfront prayers held across northern India.

Rooted in ancient Vedic tradition, the ceremony featured rhythmic chanting, sacred prayers, devotional music, and multi-tiered brass oil lamps. Organisers framed the ritual as an offering of gratitude toward nature, conscious living, and the life-sustaining flow of water. Addressing the gathering, Brahmacharini Shripriya Chaitanya, Resident Teacher of Chinmaya Mission UK, emphasized that the Ganges represents the eternal stream of spiritual wisdom popularized globally by the mission’s founder, Swami Chinmayananda. She noted that bringing the spirit of the Aarti to London created a shared platform of unity, respect, and mutual goodwill across diverse communities.

Environmental stewardship remained central to the proceedings, with organisers ensuring that the sacred ritual respected local ecological protocols. The ceremony was carried out entirely on the riverbank, with strict measures prohibiting any lamps, floral offerings, or ceremonial items from being released or poured into the water. Organisers also curtailed single-use plastics and managed site waste carefully throughout the evening. The well-attended gathering drew spiritual dignitaries and representatives from Hindu groups across Britain, prompting expectations that the ceremony could become an annual fixture during London’s autumn calendar.
