New Delhi: Customs authorities stationed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi have booked a 46-year-old Indian national for allegedly smuggling gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 2.18 crore. The passenger had arrived on an international flight from Toronto, Canada, when officials intercepted her based on routine surveillance and profiling.
According to statements released by the Customs Department, the woman landed at the capital’s airport on August 24. A subsequent detailed examination of her baggage led officers to uncover undeclared gold ornaments weighing roughly 1.32 kilograms. The seized valuables, amounting to 1,327.4 grams, were assessed at a prevailing market worth of Rs 2.17 crore.
Following the recovery, customs officials registered a formal case under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act on August 25 to investigate the illicit transport and tax evasion. Investigators are currently conducting inquiries to determine the intended distribution network and whether additional intermediaries were involved in facilitating the operation.
