RAMPURHAT — Bristi Mukherjee, the 28-year-old niece of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her residence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday afternoon, according to police officials. The deceased was discovered hanging inside a room on the second floor of her family home in Kusumba village, located in the Rampurhat area.
Local law enforcement authorities dispatched a team to the spot, secured the premises, and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Senior police officials confirmed that an unnatural death case has been registered and a comprehensive inquiry has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the incident. Investigators stated that conclusive findings regarding the cause of death would be established following the autopsy report and further procedural inquiries.
According to family members, Mukherjee had been battling clinical depression over the past few years and was undergoing medical treatment. Relatives stated that her mental distress had deepened significantly after she lost her employment following a Supreme Court ruling that cancelled government-aided school appointments amid corruption allegations. Police are currently questioning relatives and examining personal records as part of the continuing investigation.
