Chandigarh: After several relatively dry days, parts of Punjab are likely to receive rain over the next four days, with the weather department maintaining a yellow alert until September 5. Chandigarh is also expected to remain partly cloudy, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers possible.
On Tuesday, rainfall is forecast in 13 districts of Punjab, although the intensity is expected to vary from place to place. Light to moderate showers may occur in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and Mohali, while isolated locations in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala could also receive rain.
The recent dry spell has resulted in increasing heat and humidity across the state. However, rainfall activity in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh brought down Punjab’s average temperature by 0.4°C. Despite the decline, the state’s average temperature remains 1.9°C above normal.
Faridkot recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38.3°C, highlighting the persistence of warm conditions in several parts of the state.
Only Pathankot Received Rain on Monday
Despite forecasts of rainfall across several districts on Monday, most areas remained dry. Pathankot was the only district to record rainfall, receiving around 1 mm.
The weather department has now indicated a greater possibility of showers over the coming days as multiple weather systems influence the region.
A Western Disturbance over upper-air areas of northern Pakistan and Jammu is currently affecting weather conditions in Punjab. At the same time, the monsoon trough is extending through Amritsar and Patiala, supporting the possibility of cloud development and rainfall.
Chandigarh Air Quality Remains Clean
While temperatures remain elevated, Chandigarh has continued to record favourable air quality. The city’s AQI remained below 50 for 27 days during August, keeping pollution levels in the ‘good’ category.
Residents can expect cloudy conditions during the coming days, with rain or thunderstorms possible at intervals.
Punjab Power Demand Crosses 14,500 MW
Meanwhile, electricity consumption in Punjab remains high amid the prevailing warm and humid weather. The state’s total power demand touched 14,569 MW on Tuesday morning.
Punjab’s own generating stations were supplying around 4,497 MW, while approximately 10,076 MW was being sourced from outside the state to meet the requirement.
With rainfall expected in several areas, temperatures may see some temporary relief, although humid conditions are likely to persist. Commuters and residents in areas expecting thunderstorms have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions.
