Leh: In a high-risk evacuation operation at an altitude of around 18,600 feet near Nun Kun, Indian Army Aviation pilots successfully evacuated an injured person from a steep and highly challenging terrain where a conventional helicopter landing was virtually impossible.
The rescue operation was carried out under difficult conditions, with strong winds and no suitable landing area adding to the risks faced by the crew.

Helicopter modified for critical evacuation
To make the mission possible, the helicopter was reportedly lightened by removing non-essential equipment and carrying only a limited quantity of fuel.
These measures reduced the aircraft’s weight and helped the pilots operate in the demanding high-altitude environment.
Despite the difficult slope and lack of a proper landing zone, the aviators managed to position the helicopter with exceptional precision. At one critical point, one skid of the helicopter touched the slope, allowing the casualty to be evacuated.
Rescue completed during final landing opportunity
The operation was conducted during what was described as the last available landing window of the day, leaving the crew with little room for error.
The combination of extreme altitude, steep terrain and unpredictable winds made the evacuation particularly demanding. The pilots had to carefully balance aircraft performance, terrain limitations and the safety of the casualty and rescue team.
