Edmonton: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly condemned a violent stabbing incident that left two worshippers injured at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in northeast Edmonton on Friday morning, stating that no one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship. In a statement shared on social media, the Prime Minister described the violent encounter as appalling while extending his thoughts to the two victims, their families, and the broader Sikh community shaken by the event.

The confrontation occurred around 5:00 a.m. during early morning prayers at the temple near 14 Street and Horsehill Road. According to the Edmonton Police Service, an armed 27-year-old male entered the premises and attempted to force his way into the main prayer hall before staff and worshippers intervened. During the ensuing scuffle, two patrons, aged 51 and 75, suffered non-life-threatening wounds. Quick-acting witnesses detained the assailant on site before responding officers arrived to take him into custody.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the suspect has a documented history of violent offences and had been released from a federal penitentiary in Alberta just a day earlier after serving a sentence for aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer. Investigators noted that he had subsequently failed to report to his assigned halfway house in Edmonton prior to the assault. Formal charges remain pending while the specialized Hate Crimes Unit continues to examine whether the attack was motivated by religious or racial bias.

The violent disturbance has heightened security concerns among community members in Alberta, following separate reports of threatening telephone calls targeting Sikh places of worship in Calgary earlier in the week. The World Sikh Organization of Canada condemned the violence as deeply alarming, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith joined federal officials in wishing the victims a swift recovery and reaffirming the right of all citizens to practice their faith free from intimidation and hostility.
