Bhind: Eight laborers were killed and 32 others injured after a pickup vehicle carrying agricultural workers collided head-on with a dumper on NH-719 in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district in the early hours of the day.
The crash occurred around 1 am near Chhimka village on the Bhind-Gwalior highway. According to preliminary information, the pickup driver was reportedly trying to steer clear of cows resting on the road when the vehicle came into the path of the approaching dumper.
The victims were reportedly from Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. They had travelled to Madhya Pradesh for paddy transplantation work and were heading back after finishing their assignment when the accident occurred.
The impact was severe, leaving several occupants trapped and injured. Local residents reached the spot after hearing the crash and assisted police in moving the injured to Gohad Hospital. Those whose condition was considered serious were subsequently referred to hospitals in Gwalior for further treatment.
Police personnel from Gohad Chauraha reached the accident site and began relief and rescue operations. The bodies of the eight deceased were taken to the mortuary, while authorities continued efforts to establish their identities and contact their families.
The collision also disrupted traffic on the busy highway for some time. Police later cleared the wreckage and shifted the damaged vehicles away from the carriageway, allowing traffic to resume.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the presence of cattle on the highway and the speed of the pickup at the time of the collision.
