Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department issuing weather warnings for 10 districts on Tuesday. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to exercise caution, particularly around rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur, where isolated areas could receive heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Una, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kullu, Solan and Shimla have been placed under a Yellow Alert.
Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti are currently not covered by any rainfall warning.
In view of the forecast, people have been advised against approaching rivers and streams and entering locations susceptible to landslides. Residents have also been asked to avoid non-essential travel during periods of intense rain and follow directions issued by local authorities.
Rainfall activity is expected to remain in the state through August 22, with several areas likely to receive light to moderate showers. According to the weather department’s forecast, monsoon conditions are expected to begin weakening from August 23.
Despite the ongoing rainy spell, Himachal Pradesh has recorded a rainfall deficit during the current monsoon season. The state has received around 469.6 mm of rain between June 1 and August 17, against the normal average of 519.5 mm for the corresponding period.
This amounts to a rainfall shortfall of about 10 per cent so far this monsoon season. With heavy rain forecast in several districts, authorities remain watchful for possible disruptions caused by water accumulation, landslides and swollen streams.
