Birbhum: Former Trinamool Congress MLA from Rampurhat and former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Asish Bandyopadhyay, was found dead at his party office, police said.
According to Birbhum district police, Bandyopadhyay was found hanging inside the office. A suicide note was also recovered from the scene.
Police said the note stated that no one should be held responsible for his death. The contents of the note are being examined as part of the investigation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through political circles in West Bengal, particularly in Birbhum, where Bandyopadhyay had been a prominent Trinamool Congress figure.
Police begin investigation
Following the discovery, police reached the party office and began examining the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators are expected to question people associated with the former legislator and examine other evidence gathered from the location.
The authorities have not indicated any immediate suspicion against another person. The suicide note recovered from the scene is being treated as an important part of the ongoing inquiry.
Bandyopadhyay had represented Rampurhat and served in the West Bengal Assembly, besides holding the position of Deputy Speaker.
