Chandigarh: Continuous rainfall across Punjab and neighbouring areas has increased water inflows into the state’s key reservoirs, with both Bhakra and Pong dams witnessing a rise in their water levels. Despite the increase, the reservoirs remain well below their respective maximum permissible levels and there is no immediate indication of a flood threat.
The rising inflow, however, has prompted closer monitoring as more rain is expected in the region.
Bhakra sees inflow of over 48,000 cusecs
The water level at Bhakra Dam has reached 1,617.88 feet. The reservoir is currently receiving water at a rate of 48,548 cusecs, while around 25,150 cusecs is being released downstream.
This means the inflow is currently substantially higher than the outflow, resulting in a gradual increase in the reservoir level.
Bhakra’s normal maximum level is 1,680 feet, leaving the reservoir more than 62 feet below that mark.
Pong Dam also records strong inflow
A similar pattern has been observed at Pong Dam, where the water level stands at 1,352.37 feet.
The reservoir is receiving approximately 52,326 cusecs of water, against an outflow of 15,507 cusecs. The difference between inflow and discharge has contributed to the continuing rise in the dam’s water level.
Pong Dam’s maximum level is 1,390 feet, meaning the current level remains nearly 38 feet below the upper limit.
No immediate flood threat, but situation under watch
Although water levels at both reservoirs are climbing, they remain below the maximum levels at present. Authorities are keeping a close watch on inflows and outflows as rainfall continues across the catchment areas.
The key concern is not the present water level alone but the pace at which additional water enters the reservoirs. If heavy rainfall persists, inflows could increase further and require changes in discharge levels.
For now, the dam situation does not indicate an immediate danger. However, with the monsoon remaining active, authorities are expected to continue monitoring the reservoirs and downstream areas closely.
