BENGALURU — Rotary-wing operations in India received a significant technological upgrade as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru became the country’s first facility to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance–Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach. Designed exclusively for rotary-wing aircraft, the satellite-guided precision navigation system allows helicopters to execute highly accurate, optimised flight paths while navigating complex urban landscapes and difficult terrain safely.

Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the procedure underwent rigorous validation through flight trials conducted by HAL test pilots before receiving formal regulatory approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The newly implemented system is projected to drastically improve operational efficiency by cutting down helicopter approach times at HAL Airport from approximately 12 minutes to just four minutes.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K described the launch as a landmark achievement for the national aviation ecosystem, establishing a benchmark for future deployment at airports nationwide. Unlike traditional approach methods, the satellite-backed system defines a precise trajectory that enables safer operations in adverse weather conditions, reduces noise footprints over densely populated urban zones, and improves airspace utilisation alongside fixed-wing aircraft.

Handling nearly 50 helicopter movements daily, HAL Airport serves as a central hub for military flight testing, charter services, and rotary-wing operations in Bengaluru. Officials emphasised that the improved navigation capability will provide crucial benefits for time-sensitive air ambulance missions, search-and-rescue tasks, and emergency response services where rapid, reliable access is vital.
