Puducherry: Heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a wall near the Mettupalayam lorry terminal in Puducherry, leaving one person feared dead and prompting a large-scale rescue operation on Tuesday.
According to initial reports, the wall gave way following persistent rain, trapping several people beneath the debris. Fire and Rescue Services personnel, assisted by local residents, immediately launched efforts to clear the rubble and search for those believed to be trapped.
Rescue teams continued operations at the site using manual equipment and other resources to reach those buried under the collapsed structure.
Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy visited the accident site to assess the situation and monitor the ongoing rescue efforts. He also interacted with officials overseeing the operation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people trapped or the cause of the collapse. The incident is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall that has affected several parts of the Union Territory.
Officials said rescue work will continue until all those trapped are accounted for, while further details are awaited.
