Raebareli: In a disturbing case highlighting the misuse of artificial intelligence, a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli district has been taken into custody for allegedly sharing an AI-generated indecent video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.
The accused, identified as Durgesh Kumar, a resident of Bannawa village under the jurisdiction of Bachhrawan police station, was detained after local authorities were alerted to the circulation of the digitally manipulated content.
Swift Action by Authorities
Confirming the arrest, Raebareli police issued an official statement noting that the video, which was generated using artificial intelligence tools, contained inappropriate and offensive visuals intended to defame Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The clip had been uploaded and circulated across social media platforms, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement.
“Durgesh Kumar has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway. He will be presented before the appropriate court,” the police said.
Rising Concerns Over Deepfake Abuse
This incident has once again brought to the forefront the growing concerns surrounding the unethical use of AI technologies, particularly in the form of deepfakes — hyper-realistic fabricated videos created using machine learning algorithms.
Cybercrime experts warn that such tools, once considered niche, are now increasingly accessible and can be used to manipulate political discourse or damage reputations.
“This is not just about one individual or one video — it reflects a dangerous trend where AI is used irresponsibly to spread misinformation and obscene content,” said a senior official from the state cyber cell, who confirmed that digital forensics teams are examining the origin and reach of the video.
Legal Repercussions Likely
Police have registered a case against Kumar under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, which deal with defamation, obscenity, and misuse of digital platforms. Depending on the findings of the investigation, additional charges may be added.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of online content ahead of key political events, with security agencies and social media platforms being urged to crack down on fake or inflammatory material.
