Samarkand, Uzberkistan – In a dramatic turn at the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament, 16-year-old chess prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra shocked the chess world by defeating reigning World Champion D Gukesh, the youngest world champion in history.

With this victory, Mishra carved his name into history as the youngest player ever to beat a sitting world champion in classical chess, breaking a 33-year-old record set by Grandmaster Gata Kamsky.

Mishra, who lives in New Jersey with his Indian-origin family, has long been celebrated as one of the brightest young talents in chess. Taught the game by his parents at the age of two, he has steadily risen to prominence. In June 2021, he became the youngest Grandmaster at 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days, surpassing the long-standing record of Sergey Karjakin.

Facing Gukesh with the black pieces, Mishra displayed remarkable composure and tactical brilliance, securing the win after a grueling 61-move battle.

The upset not only cements Mishra’s reputation as one of the most promising players of his generation but also marks a defining moment in modern chess history.
