New Delhi: Activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a handwritten appeal from his hospital bed, calling on citizens to join the July 20 march to Parliament and describing the demonstration as India’s “second freedom movement”. The message was shared on X by his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, after Wangchuk was forcibly relocated from his protest site at Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police.

In his letter, the education reformer and climate activist framed the upcoming demonstration as a campaign for a “fear-free” and “injustice-free” nation. He specifically cited systemic issues like examination paper leaks as forms of injustice and categorized his current status at Safdarjung Hospital as an “illegal detention”. The letter concluded with an earnest plea for the public to make the march a success, signing off with an explicit reference to being held against his will at the medical facility.

The escalation follows the Delhi Police’s decision to shift Wangchuk on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike, citing health concerns and compliance with a Delhi High Court order to monitor his vitals. Organizers and family members have disputed the necessity of the hospitalization, alleging that the high court only mandated regular medical checkups rather than a forced transfer. Protesters at the site reported scuffles and subsequent police crackdowns as authorities cleared the remaining demonstrators from Jantar Mantar.

The protest, orchestrated alongside the Cockroach Janata Party, aims to press the Union government for thorough accountability regarding recent competitive examination irregularities. The movement continues to demand comprehensive structural reforms to the national examination framework and the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Despite the removal of its primary face from the venue, organizers have confirmed that the “Chalo Sansad” march will proceed as scheduled to coincide with the opening day of the parliamentary Monsoon Session.
