Rajouri: Relentless rainfall triggered flash floods in parts of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Sunday, causing significant disruption and prompting authorities to issue a high alert across vulnerable areas.

The overflowing Dharhali River inundated the New Bus Stand area at Bela, where fast-moving floodwaters swept away several parked vehicles. Visuals from the affected locality showed muddy water rushing through roads and low-lying areas, leaving behind extensive damage.

Officials said the sudden rise in the river’s water level followed continuous heavy rain in the region. Although no casualties had been reported at the time of filing this report, authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and monitoring the situation closely.

The district administration has appealed to residents to remain vigilant as the Meteorological Department has predicted that rainfall is likely to continue. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in flood-prone and hilly areas, where roads may become unsafe due to waterlogging or landslides.

Citizens have also been warned to stay away from rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs, as water levels can rise rapidly during periods of intense rainfall.

Emergency teams have been kept on standby to respond to any rescue or relief requirements, while officials are continuously monitoring river levels and weather conditions. The administration has urged the public to follow official advisories and report any emergency immediately to local authorities.

With the monsoon remaining active across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials have emphasised that precautionary measures and timely public cooperation will be crucial in preventing further incidents.
