Sriharikota: India’s commercial space sector achieved a historic milestone today as Skyroot Aerospace successfully executed its maiden orbital flight, “Mission Aagaman,” from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The flawless launch of Vikram-1 marks the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket to reach space, signaling a monumental shift away from exclusively government-led space programs toward competitive private enterprise.
The 24-metre vehicle stands as a significant triumph for domestic manufacturing and engineering. Built utilizing advanced carbon-composite materials, the rocket features a sophisticated four-stage configuration consisting of three solid-fuel stages complemented by a liquid orbital adjustment module. Designed specifically to deploy payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into a 450-kilometre Low Earth Orbit, the infrastructure aims to cater to the growing international demand for rapid, on-demand satellite launch services.
Among the commercial cargo successfully transported during the test flight was the “Diamond Lotus,” a lab-grown diamond created by Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds, demonstrating the vehicle’s immediate readiness for high-value commercial logistics. The payload bay also carried a deeply symbolic cargo, featuring a handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi bearing the words “Vande Mataram,” alongside personal messages from the engineering team, global investors, and policymakers.
Prior to the launch, Prime Minister Modi highly commended the mission on social media, characterizing the deployment of Vikram-1 as a historic new frontier that perfectly reflects the entrepreneurial spirit and technical talent of the nation’s youth. He emphasized that the successful venture underscores how ongoing domestic space sector reforms are effectively unlocking fresh opportunities for innovation and industrial enterprise, inspiring a whole new generation of aerospace innovators.
