Jalandhar: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jalandhar on Friday, the city police have rolled out an extensive traffic management plan, introducing 31 diversion points across the city to facilitate smooth movement during the high-security event. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel in advance and use alternative routes throughout the day.

The traffic restrictions will remain in force from 8 am to 8 pm on July 17, covering both urban roads and highways connecting Jalandhar with neighbouring districts. Senior officers of the Commissionerate Police are overseeing the arrangements, with additional personnel deployed at major junctions and sensitive locations.

According to the police, the objective is to ensure seamless movement for emergency services, local residents and visitors while maintaining strict security around the Prime Minister’s programme. Officials have appealed to the public to cooperate with traffic personnel and avoid unnecessary travel through restricted stretches during peak movement hours.

Heavy commercial vehicles will face the biggest changes. Trucks, trailers and containers travelling towards Amritsar from the Ludhiana side have been redirected through Phagwara, Nakodar, Kapurthala and Subhanpur, while vehicles bound for Hoshiarpur and Pathankot will be diverted through the Chandigarh bypass and Mehtiana corridor. Similar diversions have also been planned for freight traffic originating from Moga.

Public transport services have also been rerouted. Buses travelling from Jalandhar towards Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana will operate through designated alternative roads identified by the police to reduce congestion around the Prime Minister’s route.

Within the city, traffic restrictions will affect several important intersections. Diversions have been arranged near GNA Chowk, Deep Nagar, Defence Colony, Chogitti Underbridge, Lama Pind Chowk, Pathankot Chowk, Workshop Chowk, Kapurthala Chowk and other busy stretches. Vehicles entering the city from surrounding districts will also be guided through alternate roads to prevent bottlenecks.

The rural police have simultaneously implemented diversions for vehicles arriving from Dasuya, Tanda, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Nakodar, Kala Sanghian, Kapurthala and Subhanpur, ensuring traffic remains evenly distributed throughout the district.

Police officials have requested motorists to strictly follow on-ground directions, obey diversion signage and allow extra travel time. They said the temporary restrictions are aimed at ensuring public safety and smooth traffic management during the Prime Minister’s visit while minimising inconvenience to residents as far as possible.
