Chandigarh: Chandigarh remained under the grip of an active monsoon on Friday after overnight rainfall continued across the city, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert warning of another spell of heavy rain over the Tricity region.
Rainfall that began late Thursday persisted through the night, leaving several roads waterlogged and slowing traffic during the morning rush. Weather officials warned that atmospheric conditions remain favourable for intense showers over Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula in the coming hours.
In its latest nowcast, the IMD cautioned that moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning could affect the region over the next few hours. Residents have been advised to remain indoors wherever possible, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from trees, electric poles and temporary structures during adverse weather.
The warning follows Thursday’s widespread rainfall, which was the highest recorded in Chandigarh so far this monsoon season. The heavy showers led to water accumulation at several vulnerable locations, while civic agencies worked through the night to clear blocked drains and restore normal traffic movement.
Officials said teams from the Municipal Corporation and other departments remain deployed across the city to monitor flood-prone stretches and respond to complaints of waterlogging. Pumping operations have also been intensified in low-lying areas where rainwater accumulated after continuous showers.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that wet conditions are likely to persist over the weekend, with intermittent spells of rain expected until Monday. Heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
According to weather officials, the southwest monsoon continues to remain active over northern India, with abundant moisture and favourable wind patterns supporting repeated rainfall episodes across Chandigarh and adjoining areas.
From Tuesday onwards, rainfall activity is expected to gradually weaken, although light monsoon showers may continue at scattered locations.
Authorities have appealed to residents to monitor official weather updates and avoid venturing into waterlogged roads unless absolutely necessary. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously due to poor visibility and slippery road conditions, while emergency services remain on standby to deal with any weather-related incidents.
The IMD’s colour-coded warning system places the Red Alert at the highest level, indicating the possibility of severe weather conditions and urging the public to take immediate precautions and strictly follow official advisories.
