France Face Selection Concern as Michael Olise’s Booking Stands Ahead of Morocco Quarter-final

France: France have suffered a setback ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final clash against Morocco after FIFA rejected an appeal against Michael Olise’s yellow card, leaving the in-form winger one booking away from suspension.

Head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed that the French Football Federation’s request to overturn the caution was unsuccessful. As a result, Olise will enter the knockout encounter under disciplinary pressure, knowing another yellow card would rule him out of a possible semi-final if France progress.

Olise received the booking during France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay following a heated exchange with midfielder Matias Galarza. The incident sparked debate after television replays suggested there was minimal contact between the two players, but FIFA has decided to let the referee’s decision stand.

The Bayern Munich attacker has emerged as one of France’s standout performers in the tournament and is expected to play a crucial role against Morocco. However, the disciplinary situation means he will have to balance his attacking aggression with caution throughout the match.

France also have two other players walking a similar disciplinary tightrope. Bradley Barcola and Manu Kone remain one booking away from suspension after receiving yellow cards in the previous round, adding to Deschamps’ selection concerns as the competition reaches its decisive stage.

There was, however, encouraging news regarding midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who has been recovering from a thigh injury that kept him out of the Paraguay fixture. Deschamps said the Real Madrid star is making steady progress and could return to training, although a final decision on his availability will depend on his condition before kick-off.

France and Morocco will meet in a highly anticipated quarter-final with a place in the last four at stake. The winners will face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals as Les Bleus continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.
