Lucknow: A tragic road accident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district claimed the lives of five people, including two children, after a private sleeper bus collided with a car and overturned off the highway in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. near Devkhari village under the jurisdiction of Bangarmau police station, close to the 230-kilometre marker on the expressway.
Preliminary information suggests that the bus struck a car before losing control and veering off the expressway. The impact caused the bus to overturn, trapping several passengers inside the mangled vehicle. Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot and began rescue operations immediately.
Five occupants lost their lives in the accident, while eight others sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were rescued from the wreckage and shifted to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment. Police said the condition of some of the injured remains critical.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the collision. Officials are examining whether speeding, driver fatigue or other factors contributed to the crash.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of lives and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed district officials to ensure that the injured receive proper medical care without delay and instructed the administration to extend all possible assistance to the families affected by the tragedy. The Chief Minister also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The accident once again underscores concerns over road safety on high-speed expressways, where early morning crashes involving passenger buses continue to pose a serious challenge. Police are collecting evidence from the scene and recording statements as part of the ongoing investigation.
