Mohali: A routine workout session turned tragic in Mohali on Wednesday when a young man collapsed while exercising at a gym and later died, leaving family members and friends in shock.
The deceased, identified as 23-year-old Mukesh from Chandigarh’s Sector 56, was reportedly working out at a fitness centre in Phase 3B2 when he suddenly lost consciousness. According to people present at the gym, the incident occurred while he was engaged in an intense lower-body training session.
Witnesses said Mukesh appeared normal when he arrived at the facility with his wife and a friend. However, moments into his workout, he reportedly complained of discomfort before collapsing unexpectedly. Gym staff and fellow members immediately rushed to assist him and arranged emergency transportation to a nearby private hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, doctors declared him dead shortly after he was brought to the medical facility.
The sudden death has sent shockwaves through his family, particularly as Mukesh had recently entered a new phase of life. He had married his wife, Sandhya, earlier this year, and the couple had been married for only a few months. Relatives described the incident as devastating and said the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Police officials reached the hospital after receiving information about the case and initiated standard legal procedures. Statements from family members and witnesses have been recorded, while the body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators said no conclusion has been reached regarding the circumstances behind the incident, and medical findings will play a crucial role in establishing what led to the young man’s sudden collapse.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to cases of unexpected medical emergencies occurring during physical exercise, particularly among younger individuals. Health experts often advise gym-goers to undergo regular health check-ups, remain aware of warning signs such as dizziness or chest discomfort, and avoid overexertion during intensive workouts.
Authorities said further action, if required, will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report and the ongoing inquiry.
