New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. According to an official press communiqué issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted Kurian’s resignation with immediate effect under clause two of Article 75 of the Constitution.
Kurian had been serving as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs, whilst also holding additional responsibilities within the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. Notably, he was recognized as the sole representative of the Christian community within the Modi-led Union Cabinet.
His exit follows the expiration of his term as a Rajya Sabha member on June 21. The development comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership decided against renominating him for the recent Upper House elections held on June 18. Kurian had previously entered the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Madhya Pradesh to fill the remainder of the term vacated by Jyotiraditya Scindia after the latter won a seat in the Lok Sabha.
Political observers consider the resignation highly significant, particularly as the ruling party also chose not to renominate another high-profile Union Minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, whose Rajya Sabha tenure has similarly concluded. The dual departures have fueled widespread speculation regarding an impending Cabinet reshuffle and broader structural changes within the Modi administration in the coming weeks
