Chandigarh: A noticeable change in weather conditions has brought relief from the scorching heat across Punjab, with temperatures dipping significantly following strong winds and cloudy skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several districts over the coming days.
According to meteorological officials, daytime temperatures across the state registered a sharp decline, with the average maximum temperature falling by around 3.6 degrees Celsius. Despite the drop, Bathinda remained the hottest location in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius.
Weather experts have forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of up to 50 kmph in parts of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala and Mansa. Chandigarh, however, is expected to witness relatively stable conditions with partly clear skies.
The changing weather pattern is being attributed to the influence of a western disturbance and an active atmospheric system affecting neighbouring regions. These developments are expected to keep conditions favourable for intermittent showers and thunderstorms across much of the state.
Meanwhile, a tragic incident linked to the recent spell of stormy weather claimed the life of a child after a tree reportedly collapsed during strong winds. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity, particularly in areas prone to falling trees and weak structures.
Despite recent showers, Punjab continues to face a rainfall deficit this month. Official data indicates that the state has received significantly less rain than normal during June, though a few districts have recorded above-average precipitation.
Meteorologists believe the upcoming spell of rain could help improve the situation and provide further respite from the summer heat. However, they have advised farmers and residents to stay updated with local weather advisories due to the possibility of sudden thunderstorms and strong winds.
Officials expect weather conditions to remain unstable until June 26, with scattered rainfall activity likely in several districts. Temperatures are expected to stay near current levels, offering continued relief from the intense heat experienced earlier this month.
