New Delhi: Senior US trade official Jamieson Greer has arrived in India for discussions aimed at advancing negotiations on an interim trade agreement between the two countries. The visit comes as New Delhi and Washington work toward finalising a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, Greer will meet Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior Indian officials during his stay in New Delhi. The talks are expected to focus on implementing the commitments outlined in the joint statement issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump earlier this year.
The interim agreement was first discussed during the leaders’ meeting in February and has since become a key part of the wider economic partnership between the two nations. Officials on both sides are looking to strengthen trade ties, improve market access, and address long-standing commercial issues.
Momentum for the negotiations increased after Modi and Trump met again on the sidelines of the recent G7 Summit in France. Following that meeting, President Trump indicated that India and the United States were close to reaching a trade deal.
Observers believe Greer’s visit could help resolve pending issues and lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive agreement, reflecting the growing strategic and economic partnership between the world’s two largest democracies.
