Following the signing of a preliminary agreement last week, American and Iranian diplomats have entered a crucial 60-day window to iron out complex technical specifications, the outcome of which carries profound consequences for international security and the global economy.
The commencement of these vital discussions was severely complicated by intense cross-border engagements in Lebanon between Israeli forces and the Tehran-backed Hezbollah militia, followed by an announcement from the Iranian armed forces claiming the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While the geopolitical friction initially delayed the Vice President’s scheduled Friday departure after Iranian delegates briefly cancelled their attendance, US Central Command has countered Tehran’s assertions, clarifying that American forces are actively ensuring the unhindered maritime transit of global energy supplies through the strategic waterway.
The Iranian delegation, which includes parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, landed in Switzerland shortly before the American aircraft.
