Chandigarh: A dramatic turn unfolded in the investigation into the murder of a cashier from a medical store in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 when two accused were injured during a police operation after allegedly attempting to escape while being transported back from Jammu and Kashmir.
According to police sources, the incident took place in the early hours of Thursday near the forested stretch of Sector 25. The suspects, identified as Sunny Mehra and Aryan, had recently been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the killing of Janki Das, who worked as a cashier at Shri Kumar Medical Store.
Officials said the accused allegedly tried to flee custody after the police vehicle met with an accident while passing through the isolated area. Preliminary information suggests the driver, who had reportedly been travelling continuously for an extended period, lost control of the vehicle after it struck a tree.
Investigators claim the two suspects took advantage of the situation, allegedly snatched a service weapon from a police official and attempted to escape. Police further alleged that shots were fired during the escape bid, prompting officers accompanying the convoy to retaliate.
During the exchange, Sunny Mehra sustained two bullet injuries, while Aryan suffered one gunshot wound. Police officials said both were hit in the legs and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. A member of the police team also suffered an injury to the neck during the incident.
The operation was reportedly supervised by officers from the Chandigarh Police’s Operation Cell and Crime Branch, who had escorted the accused following their arrest outside the Union Territory. Security has since been tightened around the hospital where the injured suspects are undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, an audio recording purportedly linked to gangster Goldy Dhillon surfaced on social media shortly after the arrests. The clip allegedly warns of consequences if any harm comes to the detained individuals and calls for them to be dealt with strictly under legal procedures.
However, authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of the recording, and no official verification has been made regarding its origin or contents. Investigators are expected to examine the audio as part of the ongoing probe.
Police teams continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the encounter and the alleged escape attempt, while forensic and procedural inquiries are underway. Officials have indicated that further details will be shared after the completion of the preliminary investigation.
The encounter marks a significant development in the high-profile murder case, with law enforcement agencies continuing efforts to uncover the full sequence of events and any wider criminal links associated with the accused.
