Chandigarh: After days of fluctuating weather conditions, several parts of Punjab are expected to witness thunderstorms, rain and strong winds as a fresh weather system begins to influence the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts, warning residents of lightning activity and wind speeds that could touch 50 kmph.
The change in weather comes as atmospheric conditions across north India become increasingly favourable for rainfall. Meteorologists have predicted scattered showers and thunderstorm activity across 16 districts of Punjab, particularly in the western and northern parts of the state.
Districts likely to experience the impact include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa and Sangrur. Officials expect light to moderate rainfall in isolated pockets, accompanied by strong gusts and lightning.
The weather shift has already contributed to a slight decline in daytime temperatures. Maximum temperatures across the state remained below seasonal averages, with Anandpur Sahib recording the highest temperature at 37.2 degrees Celsius. The overall drop has brought temporary relief from the summer heat in many areas.
Weather experts are also monitoring developments in the Himalayan region, where recent rainfall has increased inflows into reservoirs, including the Bhakra Dam. Rising water levels are being closely watched by authorities as precipitation continues in upstream catchment areas.
Rainfall figures for June so far paint a mixed picture across Punjab. While the state has recorded nearly normal rainfall overall, regional variations remain significant. Some districts have received substantially more rain than usual, whereas others continue to face deficits.
Nawanshahr has emerged as one of the wettest districts this month, registering rainfall far above the seasonal average. Tarn Taran, Ludhiana, Ferozepur and Fazilka have also recorded surplus precipitation. In contrast, Barnala and Hoshiarpur remain among the districts reporting below-normal rainfall levels.
Meteorological officials say weather activity is likely to increase further with the arrival of a new Western Disturbance from June 18. The system is expected to enhance moisture levels over the region, creating favourable conditions for additional rainfall and thunderstorm development through the week.
According to forecasters, intermittent rain and gusty winds may continue until June 22. Areas across central and southern Punjab could witness repeated spells of showers, while isolated locations may experience brief but intense thunderstorms.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions. People have been urged to avoid sheltering under trees, standing near electric poles or venturing into open fields during lightning activity. Farmers and commuters have also been asked to keep track of local weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.
With another weather system approaching and rainfall activity expected to intensify, Punjab is likely to experience a relatively cooler and wetter week compared to recent days, offering respite from heat while bringing renewed focus on weather-related preparedness.
