New Delhi: New Zealand cricket icon Kane Williamson on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-year career that established him as one of the finest batters and most respected leaders in the history of the game.

Williamson, widely regarded as New Zealand’s greatest-ever batter, represented his country in 378 international matches across formats and leaves the game as the nation’s highest run-scorer in international cricket. His retirement follows his decision to step away from T20 Internationals in 2025.

In a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket, the 35-year-old said the decision had been on his mind for some time but had become clear in recent days.

“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms,” Williamson said.

Williamson concludes his career with 19,346 international runs, including more than 9,500 Test runs, 33 Test centuries and six double hundreds. Across all formats, he scored 48 international centuries and became the cornerstone of New Zealand’s most successful era in world cricket.

As captain, Williamson led the Black Caps to two ICC World Cup finals and three World Cup semi-finals. His greatest achievement came in 2021 when he guided New Zealand to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship, securing the country’s first major ICC title.

His contributions were recognised globally, earning him the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2015 and the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year honour in 2019.

Reflecting on his journey, Williamson said representing New Zealand had evolved from a childhood dream into a lifelong commitment. He described international cricket as a platform that constantly challenged players to become better versions of themselves while creating lasting bonds within the team.

Rather than focusing solely on trophies and personal milestones, Williamson said the most rewarding aspect of his career was being part of New Zealand cricket’s growth and helping the team reach new heights.

He pointed to the World Test Championship triumph and the steady progress of the Black Caps as some of his most cherished memories, saying the team’s evolution over the years had brought immense satisfaction.

Williamson also expressed confidence in the future of New Zealand cricket, describing the current squad as talented and capable of achieving even greater success in the years ahead.

Looking forward to life after international cricket, the former captain said he was eager to spend more time with his young family and explore the next chapter of his life.

Known for his calm temperament, elegant technique and understated leadership, Williamson departs the international stage as one of cricket’s most admired figures and a symbol of New Zealand’s rise among the sport’s elite nations.
