CHANDIGARH : In a major initiative to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve civic amenities across the Tricity’s peripheral towns, Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Friday announced a series of time-bound development projects for Municipal Councils Kharar, Derabassi, Zirakpur, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali and Gharuan. Reviewing the progress of ongoing works with Executive Officers here at Municipal Bhawan, the Local Government Minister also directed officials to ensure strict adherence to timelines and ordered weekly reviews of all projects.

After the review meeting, Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said that more than 250 kilometres of roads are currently under construction across the seven towns and that several major road corridors will also be beautified as part of the infrastructure upgradation drive. “Over 250 kilometres of roads are under construction across Kharar, Derabassi, Zirakpur, Nayagaon, Banur, Kurali and Gharuan. Along with strengthening road infrastructure, major road corridors will also be beautified to improve the urban landscape and provide better connectivity to residents,” he said.

The Local Government Minister said that sewer desilting operations are being carried out on a large scale. “To ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply, 50 new tubewells will be installed across these urban local bodies. Fifteen tubewells will be installed in Kharar, ten each in Zirakpur and Nayagaon, five in Derabassi, four in Lalru, three in Banur and one in Kurali. Sewer desilting work is also being carried out at full pace to improve sanitation services,” he stated.

Harjot Singh Bains further directed urban local bodies to begin work within the next 15 days on several critical road projects that have been identified as priorities for public convenience and urban mobility. “The work on Hospital to Tepla Road in Banur; Railway Road, Main Bazaar Road and Badali Road in Kurali; Ambala-Chandigarh Road towards Singhpura and High Ground Road in Zirakpur; Hospital Road and Main Airport Road near Gopal Sweets in Kharar; Haibatpur Road in Derabassi; Kroran Road and Nada Road in Nayagaon; and Banur to Jalalpur Road and ITI to Koulimajra Road in Lalru must begin within the next 15 days,” he directed.

Emphasising accountability and timely execution, the Local Government Minister warned officials that delays in project implementation would not be tolerated and said that regular monitoring would be undertaken at the highest level. “We are monitoring every kilometre of road, every tubewell and every deadline. The people of Punjab deserve nothing less. Weekly reviews of all ongoing projects will be conducted and strict action will be taken against officials responsible for unnecessary delays,” he said.

Highlighting the Bhagwant Mann Government’s commitment to long-term infrastructure development, the Minister said that the focus is on creating durable and future-ready urban infrastructure instead of temporary solutions. “The era of patchwork is over. We are building a future-ready Punjab. This is CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s model of governance: transparent, time-bound and transformative,” he asserted.
