Surrey, Canada: In a significant development in Canada’s ongoing campaign against organised extortion networks, three Punjabi-origin men have been convicted for their involvement in extortion-related offences, marking one of the first successful prosecutions in such cases.
The convicted individuals have been identified as Harjot Singh, Taranveer Singh, and Dayajeet Singh Billing. According to authorities, all three admitted their involvement during the legal proceedings, paving the way for their conviction.
Law enforcement officials described the verdict as a milestone in efforts to dismantle extortion rackets that have increasingly become a concern in parts of British Columbia, particularly within the South Asian community.
Speaking after the court’s decision, Surrey Police officer Lindsey Houghton said the convictions represent only the beginning of a broader crackdown. He indicated that investigators are actively pursuing several other cases and suggested that additional arrests and convictions could follow in the coming months.
Police agencies have intensified investigations into extortion complaints involving threats, intimidation, and demands for money targeting business owners and members of the community. Authorities believe coordinated enforcement action and stronger witness cooperation have strengthened ongoing cases.
Officials have also appealed to victims of extortion to come forward without fear, assuring them that law enforcement agencies are committed to protecting witnesses and taking firm action against organised criminal activity.
The latest convictions are being viewed as an important step in reinforcing public confidence and sending a strong message that extortion-related offences will be met with strict legal consequences.
Investigations into other suspected extortion networks remain underway, with police maintaining that further developments are expected as ongoing probes progress.
