US Launches Military Response Against Iran Following Helicopter Incident Near Strait of Hormuz

Washington/Tehran: Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on Wednesday after the United States carried out airstrikes on Iranian military installations, citing the downing of an American Army helicopter during operations near the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. Central Command confirmed that fighter aircraft from the Air Force and Navy conducted precision strikes targeting Iranian air defence systems, surveillance radar installations and command facilities in western and southern Iran. According to U.S. officials, the action was intended as a limited and proportional military response.

Iranian authorities acknowledged explosions in areas around Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island but did not immediately disclose the extent of the damage or possible casualties. State media later reported that the attacks had ended after a brief wave of strikes.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly accused Iran of bringing down an American AH-64 Apache helicopter during a patrol mission over the strategic waterway, declaring that Washington could not ignore such an attack. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the accusation and warned that any military action against Iran would receive a firm response.

A U.S. official familiar with the investigation said preliminary findings indicate the helicopter collided with an Iranian drone before crashing, though authorities have not confirmed whether the incident was accidental or deliberate. An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.

The two crew members aboard the helicopter survived and were rescued in what military officials described as a first-of-its-kind operation involving an autonomous drone vessel. The unmanned craft located the pilots at sea before transferring them for evacuation by helicopter, showcasing new rescue capabilities developed by the U.S. Navy.

The latest exchange has further complicated efforts to preserve a fragile ceasefire in the region. Renewed military activity between Iran, Israel and the United States has heightened concerns about broader instability, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping corridors.

Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions continue, but both Washington and Tehran have adopted increasingly firm positions, raising fears that the conflict could widen unless negotiations regain momentum in the coming days.
