New Delhi: The southwest monsoon has continued its rapid northward advance across the Indian subcontinent, successfully covering twelve states as of Sunday, according to the latest operational update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The seasonal weather transition has marked a significant milestone, with weather systems now completely enveloping the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram, bringing sustained and widespread precipitation to these regions.
Concurrently, volatile pre-monsoon weather patterns have disrupted daily life across several parts of central and northern India, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. In the Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, intense precipitation was accompanied by severe hailstorms. Meanwhile, turbulent weather systems brought high-velocity winds to parts of Madhya Pradesh, resulting in localized disruptions including an auto-rickshaw overturning on the hazardous Indore-Khandwa highway during the peak of the storm.
According to the weather department’s comprehensive forecast for Tuesday, heavy downpours are anticipated across southern peninsular India and the northeastern frontier, specifically targeting Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Concurrently, severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are highly probable across Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, while eastern Rajasthan remains under alert for strong surface winds gusting between 30 and 50 kmph.
The meteorological projection for Wednesday indicates that heavy precipitation will persist unabated over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and the Rayalaseema region. Eastern and coastal regions, including Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are scheduled to witness prolonged thunderstorm activity. Furthermore, central India is expected to experience heightened atmospheric instability, with parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh bracing for turbulent thunderstorms accompanied by strong, gusty winds reaching velocities of 40 to 60 kmph. Heavy, continuous rainfall will also remain concentrated across the northeastern states, prompting central weather scientists to issue advisories urging residents in high-risk zones to maintain strict vigilance and adhere to local administrative safety guidelines.
