Amritsar: A major burglary took place in Janiya village under the Jandiala Guru jurisdiction in Amritsar, where thieves struck the residence of a local farmer during the night. The intruders broke into the house of Balwinder Singh, escaping with approximately Rs 5 lakh in cash, 35 to 40 tolas of gold jewellery, and 8 to 10 luxury wristwatches.
According to the victim, the criminals gained access to the property by breaking the padlock on the main outer gate before dismantling a window grill to enter the living quarters. The family suspects that the burglars deployed a sedative or chemical spray to knock them out, as they subsequently ransacked the wardrobes and storage boxes without waking anyone up. Balwinder Singh noted that he usually wakes up at the slightest sound, yet the entire family remained in a deep slumber until 5:00 am, despite his son briefly leaving the house at midnight to manage water lines in the fields.
The stolen valuables included wedding jewellery belonging to the farmer’s daughter and daughter-in-law, gold purchased abroad, and heavily stamped heirloom jewellery from Dubai that belonged to his late wife. The cash kept in the house was intended for tractor maintenance and upcoming agricultural expenses. Given how precisely the thieves located the valuables, the family believes the crime was executed by someone familiar with the internal layout of the house.
While the local police arrived at the scene in the morning to conduct a preliminary assessment, Balwinder Singh expressed frustration over what he described as a slow official response, urging higher authorities to intervene amid rising law enforcement concerns across the state. Investigating officers confirmed that a formal probe has been launched, with teams currently scanning regional CCTV footage to track the suspects.
