New Delhi: A Delhi University professor was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside her apartment in East Delhi’s Vasundhara Enclave on Friday, prompting police to register a murder case and launch a detailed investigation.
The deceased, identified as Devosmita Paul, served as an Assistant Professor at Shivaji College and was residing alone in a flat at Satyam Apartments. Her husband is currently based in Bengaluru.
According to police officials, the incident came to light after the victim’s sister contacted authorities in the afternoon. Concerned after repeated phone calls went unanswered, she visited the apartment and discovered that the flat had been locked from the outside since morning.
Fearing something was wrong, she broke open the lock and entered the residence, where she found Devosmita Paul lying dead inside the flat. Police teams rushed to the scene after receiving information and began a preliminary examination.
Investigators said the victim appeared to have suffered a severe head injury caused by a heavy object. They also found injuries on her wrist, raising suspicions of a violent assault. The body was subsequently shifted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and timing of death.
Officials noted that valuables, including cash and jewellery kept inside the residence, appeared untouched, suggesting that robbery may not have been the motive behind the killing.
A case of murder has been registered, and multiple police teams have been deployed to examine CCTV footage, question potential witnesses, and trace anyone who may have come in contact with the victim before her death.
Authorities said all possible angles are being explored as investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of the university teacher.
