Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced that the Census 2027 exercise in the state will begin on August 1 and continue till the end of February next year, asserting that the nationwide headcount process has no connection with politics.

Addressing a meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna regarding the first phase of the Census of India 2027, Adhikari stressed the importance of the exercise and urged people across the state to participate actively.

“The census in Bengal will begin on August 1 and continue till midnight on February end next year. It has no connection with politics,” the chief minister said.

He stated that India had made significant progress in census operations over the years and said West Bengal must catch up with other states in ensuring accurate and updated population data.

“The country has moved far ahead in census operations, while we have remained behind,” Adhikari remarked.

The chief minister also referred to what he described as demographic changes in certain parts of West Bengal, attributing them to alleged cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh.

“We have a 600-kilometre-long unfenced border with Bangladesh. As the previous state government did not hand over land to BSF, fencing could not be done, which led to infiltration and a change in the demographic composition in parts of West Bengal,” he claimed.

Adhikari emphasised that accurate census figures are crucial for governance, policy planning and resource allocation.

“This census drive is very important. I urge everyone in Bengal to take part in it,” he said.

The Census 2027 exercise is expected to play a major role in administrative planning, welfare distribution and developmental policymaking across the country.
