Chandigarh, August 31, 2025 – Punjab is facing one of its worst flood crises in recent years, leaving behind widespread destruction and financial losses running into thousands of crores.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging urgent intervention and immediate financial support. In his letter, Mann called it a “difficult time for Punjab” and pressed the Centre to release ₹60,000 crore in pending funds owed to the state.

The Chief Minister also appealed for changes in the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms. He sought compensation of ₹50,000 per acre for farmers whose crops have been devastated by the floods. Mann stressed that the state government is committed to providing this relief but requires the Centre’s approval and backing.

The disaster has already affected over 1,000 villages and lakhs of people. Districts bearing the brunt include Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Pathankot, Ferozepur, Fazilka, and Hoshiarpur.

As per official estimates, nearly 3 lakh acres of farmland lie submerged, resulting in massive crop losses worth several thousand crores, deepening the crisis for Punjab’s farmers.
