US and Iran Edge Closer to Temporary Truce Amid Talks on Nuclear Curbs and Economic Relief

Washington: Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran appear to be moving toward a breakthrough as negotiators work on a temporary agreement aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East and restarting formal discussions on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

According to reports emerging from multiple international sources, both sides are discussing a 60-day arrangement that would extend the current fragile ceasefire while opening the door for broader negotiations involving sanctions, regional security, and nuclear restrictions.

While progress has reportedly been made behind closed doors, the proposed understanding has not yet received final approval. US Vice President JD Vance said discussions were still underway and that certain details in the draft remained unresolved. He added that President Donald Trump would ultimately decide whether to endorse the framework.

Iranian media outlets also suggested that no agreement should be considered official until confirmed by Tehran, signalling that both governments are still navigating sensitive political and strategic concerns.

At the centre of the discussions is the future of Iran’s nuclear activities. Reports indicate that negotiators are attempting to establish rules regarding Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium while securing assurances that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons development. The talks are also expected to cover future monitoring mechanisms and limits on uranium enrichment levels.

Another major issue involves the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. Under the reported framework, commercial shipping through the waterway would continue without interference. Iran would reportedly clear naval mines from the area, while the US could gradually ease maritime restrictions depending on the restoration of normal shipping traffic.

Economic relief is also believed to be a significant part of the negotiations. Sources familiar with the discussions claim Washington may consider limited sanctions relief and possible access to billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets if negotiations continue positively. Humanitarian assistance and trade access are also expected to be discussed during the proposed negotiation period.

One of the most unexpected aspects of the reported proposal is the possibility of a large international investment initiative aimed at rebuilding parts of Iran’s economy. Reports suggest discussions have included a potential long-term reconstruction and investment programme worth hundreds of billions of dollars, involving energy, infrastructure, and industrial projects.

The conflict in Lebanon has also reportedly entered the conversation. Diplomats are said to be exploring ways to reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah as part of a broader regional de-escalation effort. Fighting along the Lebanon-Israel border has intensified in recent months, increasing fears of a wider regional war.

Despite the apparent momentum, significant disagreements remain unresolved. Sources indicate there are still conflicting interpretations of the draft agreement, particularly regarding the timing of sanctions relief, the lifting of maritime restrictions, and the exact definition of a “temporary ceasefire.”

Questions also remain over who within Iran’s political structure has the authority to formally approve the arrangement, as negotiations have largely been conducted indirectly through mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.

For now, diplomats involved in the process appear focused on preventing further escalation while creating space for more comprehensive negotiations in the months ahead. Whether the current framework evolves into a lasting agreement may depend on how both sides handle the next phase of talks.
