Delhi: The Delhi government has cleared a fresh list of name changes for several Metro stations, traffic intersections, sports facilities and public institutions across the national capital, as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening local identity and honouring noted personalities.
The decisions were approved during a meeting of the State Names Authority chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday.
Among the prominent changes, Rohini West Metro Station will now carry the name “Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station,” while Rohini East Metro Station has been renamed simply as “Rohini Metro Station.” Authorities said the changes were intended to improve public identification with nearby landmarks and simplify navigation for commuters.
Another key change involves Dwarka Metro Station, which will now be known as “Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station,” reflecting the surrounding locality more accurately.
The government has also approved renaming Britannia Chowk in Shakurpur as “Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk” in memory of journalist and former parliamentarian Ashwini Chopra.
In Rohini’s Begampur area, the under-construction sports complex will now be called “Atal Khel Parisar,” dedicated to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Officials also approved the installation of a statue of the former prime minister within the sports facility.
Additionally, an under-construction hospital in Jwalapuri has been named “Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital.”
Government officials stated that the renaming exercise is part of a broader effort to connect public infrastructure with Delhi’s social, cultural and historical identity. According to officials, the move also seeks to recognise individuals and institutions that have contributed significantly to public life.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi represents not only the country’s administrative centre but also its wider cultural and historical consciousness, adding that public places should reflect those values and local heritage.
The latest renaming decisions affect multiple parts of the capital, including Rohini, Dwarka, Shakurpur and Jwalapuri, and are expected to be implemented in coordination with the concerned civic and transport authorities in the coming months.
