Kapurthala: With the Beas River swelling rapidly due to continuous rainfall in the upper Himalayan region, the Kapurthala district administration has issued an emergency advisory, urging residents of low-lying and vulnerable areas to evacuate without delay.

Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal confirmed that the river’s discharge has surged to approximately 2.35 lakh cusecs, raising concerns of potential flooding in nearby settlements. The sharp rise in water levels follows persistent overnight downpours, further exacerbated by forecasted heavy rainfall across the region.

In a public appeal, Panchal emphasized that safeguarding human lives remains the administration’s top priority. “We request all residents in flood-prone zones to cooperate fully and relocate to safer locations. Rescue and evacuation operations are ongoing, and we are deploying all necessary resources,” he stated.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the district, warning of intense rainfall in the coming hours, particularly in Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, and Bhulath subdivisions.

To assist with relief efforts, teams from the Army and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been mobilized and are currently assisting in evacuating affected families. The administration has also activated round-the-clock control rooms to coordinate emergency response and provide assistance.

Residents requiring help or information have been advised to contact the following emergency numbers:

  • District Helpline: 62800-49331, 01822-231990

  • Flood Control Room (Sultanpur Lodhi): 01828-222169

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have asked citizens to remain vigilant, avoid venturing near the riverbanks, and follow official updates.
