Chandigarh, May 21: A 62-year-old woman from Punjab, who was battling diabetes and hypertension for nearly 15 years, survived a life-threatening medical emergency after receiving timely treatment under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY). Doctors at Kashmiri Heart Care Centre in Sunam, Sangrur, said quick ICU intervention and immediate medical support played a major role in saving her life.
According to the family, Bhur Kaur had been living with diabetes and high blood pressure for many years. Her health condition was being managed through medicines and regular medical check-ups. However, the situation suddenly turned critical when her blood sugar level reportedly shot up to 550 mg/dL, causing her to collapse and lose consciousness.
Her family members said the incident created panic at home as there was very little time to react. Paramjeet, Bhur Kaur’s daughter-in-law, said the family rushed her for medical treatment while continuously praying for her recovery. Her son Harpal, who serves as a Pathi at a Gurdwara, described the situation as emotionally devastating for the family.
Doctors at Kashmiri Heart Care Centre, Sunam, stated that Bhur Kaur was brought to the hospital in a critically unstable condition. Clinical Cardiologist and Managing Director Dr. Anshuman Phull said the patient was suffering from Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), severe infection and acute respiratory failure when she arrived at the hospital.
Dr. Phull explained that extremely high blood sugar levels had pushed the patient into a dangerous metabolic condition. He said the body was under severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and organ stress. Doctors also identified sepsis, a serious condition in which infection begins affecting the body’s own organs and systems. According to the medical team, the case required immediate ICU-based treatment because delays in such situations can become life-threatening.
Hospital authorities said Bhur Kaur was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors started emergency treatment. She was provided oxygen support, IV insulin therapy, antibiotics, fluids and continuous monitoring. Doctors stated that the first few hours were extremely critical because multiple complications had to be treated at the same time, including breathing failure, infection and metabolic imbalance.
While the treatment continued inside the ICU, family members waited outside hoping for improvement in her condition. According to doctors, the first signs of recovery appeared by the third day of treatment. Her oxygen levels started improving and infection markers gradually reduced. Doctors also confirmed that she slowly regained consciousness, which they described as a major turning point in her recovery.
The hospital management said the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana played a significant role in ensuring there was no delay in starting emergency treatment. Doctors stated that because the patient was covered under the government health scheme, ICU admission and life-saving procedures could begin immediately without financial hesitation or procedural delays.
Dr. Anshuman Phull said emergency cases often depend on rapid response and timely treatment. According to him, even a short delay in critical medical situations can reduce survival chances. He added that government-supported healthcare schemes help families receive urgent care without worrying about immediate expenses.
Now recovering from the medical emergency, Bhur Kaur expressed gratitude towards the doctors and the Punjab government. She said she does not remember everything that happened during the crisis but understands that her condition had become very serious. She credited the Sehat Card and timely medical care for helping save her life.
Her family members also thanked the medical staff for their efforts during the treatment. Harpal said the family felt helpless after seeing her unconscious condition but remained hopeful throughout the difficult period. Paramjeet added that along with faith, timely medical support became equally important during the crisis.
Doctors said Bhur Kaur’s recovery highlights the importance of immediate treatment in severe diabetes-related emergencies. Medical experts also advised diabetic patients to undergo regular health monitoring and seek urgent medical attention whenever symptoms suddenly worsen.
Hospital officials stated that public healthcare schemes like Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana are helping many families access emergency treatment and advanced healthcare facilities without financial burden. According to doctors, such support becomes especially important in critical illnesses where every minute matters.
