Chennai: The newly formed government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay successfully won the confidence motion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, comfortably proving its majority on the floor of the House.
The trust vote saw the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government receive support from a broad alliance of parties, including the Congress, IUML, VCK, CPI and CPI(M), along with backing from 30 legislators belonging to the AIADMK. The motion was passed with 144 members voting in favour, while 22 MLAs opposed it.
Addressing the Assembly after the vote, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay thanked members across party lines for participating in the debate and expressed confidence that his administration would provide stable governance for the next five years.
The Chief Minister described his government as one committed to secular values and social justice. He said the administration would work for all sections of society, including those who did not support his party politically.
“Our government will function for every citizen of Tamil Nadu, not only for those who voted for us,” Vijay said during his speech in the Assembly.
He also indicated that several welfare and development schemes launched during the previous DMK government would continue without interruption, signalling continuity in public programmes and benefits.
During the discussion, opposition parties raised allegations of political manoeuvring and attempts to influence legislators. Responding to the criticism, Vijay rejected claims of horse-trading and remarked that his government was built on “horsepower, not horse-trading,” drawing loud reactions from treasury benches.
The successful floor test marks a significant political milestone for TVK, which entered the state’s political landscape promising an alternative model of governance and transparency. With the confidence motion now cleared, the Vijay-led administration is expected to begin focusing on policy implementation and cabinet priorities in the coming weeks.
