Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island: In a significant boost to India’s strategic deterrence, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the Agni missile from the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on Saturday. This specific variant of the Agni missile is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, an advanced system that allows a single missile to carry multiple warheads and strike several different targets simultaneously.
During the test, the missile deployed its various re-entry vehicles to successfully hit multiple designated targets spread across the Indian Ocean Region. This mission, aimed at validating the precision and integration of the MIRV system, confirms India’s entry into a select group of nations possessing this complex maritime and aerial strike capability. The successful hit of all targets at varying distances underscores the maturity of the country’s indigenous missile technology and its ability to penetrate sophisticated air defence systems.
