New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a formal notification for the constitution of a new legislative assembly in West Bengal, marking the completion of the electoral process in the state. The notification has been sent to the Governor, signalling the final constitutional step from the Commission’s side and paving the way for the formation of a new government.
A senior Election Commission official described the move as a crucial post-result procedure, enabling the transition toward government formation in accordance with established legal provisions. The official said the poll body had fulfilled its mandate, ensuring that the elections were conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner, strictly adhering to the statutory framework.
With the issuance of the notification, the focus now shifts to the swearing-in of newly elected representatives and the formal establishment of the government. The development effectively closes the Commission’s role in the electoral cycle while initiating the next phase of governance in the state.
The outcome of the elections saw the Bharatiya Janata Party secure a decisive mandate, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly. The result brought an end to the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year tenure in power, marking a significant political shift in West Bengal.
