Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to “Project Freedom,” a naval initiative aimed at facilitating commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, citing progress in diplomatic engagement with Iran.
In a statement, Trump said the decision was taken following requests from Pakistan and several other nations, along with what he described as significant military gains during recent operations. He added that talks with Iranian representatives have moved forward, raising hopes for a comprehensive agreement.
Despite the pause in the maritime escort effort, the US will continue enforcing its existing blockade measures in the region. Officials indicated that the suspension is intended to create space for negotiations and assess whether a final deal can be concluded.
“Project Freedom,” launched to ensure safe passage of vessels through the vital oil transit route, had been a key component of Washington’s response to tensions in the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial share of global energy shipments, making stability in the region critical for international markets.
Trump emphasised that the pause is temporary and contingent on diplomatic outcomes. If negotiations fail to produce a conclusive agreement, the US may reconsider its operational stance.
The development signals a potential shift from military posturing toward diplomacy, though uncertainty remains over whether both sides will reach a lasting resolution in the coming days.
