Tehran: A fresh diplomatic spat has erupted after Donald Trump shared a controversial post referring to countries like India and China in disparaging terms, prompting a sharp and somewhat sarcastic response from Iran.
The reaction came from Iran’s Consulate General in Mumbai, which took to the social media platform X to counter the remarks. In a video highlighting Maharashtra’s scenic landscapes and cultural vibrancy, the consulate appeared to mock Trump’s views, suggesting he undertake a “one-way cultural detox” trip. The caption, written in a mix of Hindi and English, read: “Kabhi India aa ke dekho, phir bolna,” loosely translating to “Visit India once, then comment.”
Controversy Rooted in Reposted Comments
The issue traces back to a post originally made by conservative radio host Michael Savage, who criticised US birthright citizenship policies using offensive language. Savage alleged that immigrants from nations such as India and China were exploiting the system—remarks that quickly drew criticism.
Trump’s decision to repost the comments was widely seen as an endorsement, amplifying the backlash both domestically and internationally.
India Pushes Back
India responded firmly, distancing itself from the narrative. The Ministry of External Affairs described the comments as “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” underlining that such rhetoric does not align with the reality of India-US relations.
Official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated that the partnership between the two nations remains strong and mutually respectful, despite isolated remarks that may suggest otherwise.
