Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung Resigns Amid Financial Scrutiny, Cites Moral Responsibility

Kathmandu: Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned from his post on Wednesday, taking moral responsibility amid growing scrutiny over his financial holdings and to ensure a fair investigation into the matter.

Announcing his decision in a Facebook post, Gurung said he had taken public concerns seriously and chose to step down to uphold ethical standards in public life. He had assumed office on March 26, 2026.

Stressing the importance of integrity in governance, Gurung said public trust outweighs any political position. He also referred to rising public demand—particularly among youth—for transparency and accountability, noting that leadership must remain answerable to citizens.

Gurung said his resignation would help avoid any conflict of interest and allow an impartial probe into the allegations related to his shares and financial interests. He added that when questions arise against those in power, accountability becomes essential.

In his message, he also urged citizens, media, and young people to commit to honesty and ethical conduct, asserting that meaningful change requires collective responsibility and moral courage.

The development comes amid recent political action in Nepal, where Prime Minister Balendra Shah earlier removed Labour Minister Deepak Kumar Sah on disciplinary grounds following findings of misconduct.

Gurung’s resignation marks another instance of accountability within the government, as scrutiny over public office holders continues to intensify.
