Ludhiana: A routine inspection inside Ludhiana Central Jail led to the recovery of a suspected narcotic substance from an inmate, once again raising concerns over prison security.
According to officials, the seizure was made during a surprise search operation carried out by jail authorities. The checking was led by Sukhpal Singh, who, along with his team, conducted a thorough inspection of the barracks.
During the search, around 8 grams of a white powder believed to be a narcotic substance was allegedly found in the possession of an inmate identified as Ajay Pal Singh. He is reported to be a resident of Fateh Singh Colony in Amritsar.
Following the recovery, a formal complaint was lodged by the jail administration, prompting police at Division No. 7 station to register a case. Officials said the accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the Jail Manual as well as the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for possessing banned substances inside prison premises.
The incident has once again highlighted potential lapses in jail security, as authorities seek to determine how the contraband was smuggled into the facility despite strict surveillance measures.
Police have initiated an investigation to trace the source of the substance and identify any possible network involved. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the probe, officials added.
