From Hoshiarpur to Germany’s Political Stage: Two Sisters Rise to Public Office

Hoshiarpur/Berlin: In a remarkable story of perseverance and ambition, two sisters originally from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district have carved a place for themselves in Germany’s political landscape, rising from humble beginnings to hold public office.

The journey began with their mother, Mandeep Kaur, who moved to Europe in search of better opportunities. After initially living in Portugal, she settled in Germany in 2012 with her daughters, then just children. Supporting the family through jobs in restaurants and retail stores, she ensured her daughters received quality education.

Her elder daughter, Harpreet Kaur, entered public life at a young age. She first gained recognition after being elected to a foreigners’ advisory body in 2022, where she worked on community-related issues. Building on her grassroots involvement, she contested city council elections in 2026 and secured a seat with strong public support, earning around 5,000 votes.

Her younger sister, Komalpreet Kaur, followed a similar path. Inspired partly by a question during a job interview about her contribution to society, she stepped into public service. With guidance from her elder sister, she ran for a position in the foreigners’ council and won by a significant margin.

Both sisters are now actively raising concerns related to immigrant communities, including Indians, and are contributing to civic discussions at the local and broader political levels.

Their mother recalled the early struggles, particularly learning a new language and adapting to a different culture. Despite challenges, she emphasized that dedication to education and social service played a crucial role in her daughters’ achievements.

Harpreet is currently pursuing higher studies alongside her political responsibilities, reflecting Germany’s system where public representatives often balance professional careers with civic duties.

The family’s journey—from a small village in Punjab to participating in European governance—stands as an example of determination and the opportunities available through hard work and community engagement.
